APIASF Jump Start College Tour Delivers College Success Strategies, Financial Aid Knowledge, and College Application Tips to the Twin Cities

Washington, D.C. – April 20, 2018 – The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF), the nation’s largest non-profit organization devoted to providing college scholarships for Asian and Pacific Islander Americans (APIAs), will hold its next stop of the 2018 Jump Start College Tour (JSCT) at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities on April 21, 2018 from 9:00 am to 3:15 pm. JSCT is a free college readiness workshop tour that partners with the nation’s Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs) to provide culturally relevant financial aid and college success strategies to APIA students and families.

“Colleges and universities lose many APIA students in the high school to college transition and within the first couple of years of higher education due to lack of culturally relevant resources. We know the Twin Cities is home to a large concentration of Southeast Asian Americans, whose population has a high proportion of young people entering higher education, but not completing it,” notes Neil Horikoshi, President and Executive Director of APIASF. “Getting APIA students through the college transition process and towards graduation is a goal that APIASF is making more attainable through programs like the Jump Start College Tour.”

“Wells Fargo is proud to collaborate with APIASF to bring the Jump Start College Tour to the Twin Cities to ease the transition between high school and college for APIA students,” said Georgette “Gigi” Dixon, Senior Vice President and Director of Strategic Partnerships at Wells Fargo. “We know students of color that have the opportunities and resources are more likely to stay in school and obtain a degree and APIA students are no different. We are committed to seeing that each and every community can make higher education a reality, including APIAs.”

JSCT participants are given an opportunity to visit AANAPISI schools to attend workshops held by admissions staff and financial aid experts who offer tips on the admissions and financial aid process on the spot. All stops include both parent and student sessions. The 2018 Jump Start College Tour is made possible by AT&T, FedEx, and founding sponsor, Wells Fargo.
