Investment Supports College Access and Career Development for APIA Students Nationwide
Washington, DC (February 1, 2022)
Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholars (APIA Scholars) is honored to receive a $1.1 million grant from USAA. The partnership directly serves under-resourced APIA college students across the nation with holistic programming that addresses opportunity gaps within higher education. APIA Scholars, in partnership with USAA, can accelerate its mission to educate, elevate, and empower a diverse APIA community.
“On behalf of APIA Scholars, I extend my gratitude to USAA for supporting the work of our organization. USAA’s investment will move us closer to a day where equity, justice, opportunity, and access to education is a reality for Asian & Pacific Islander American young people and we look forward to partnering with them to ensure this is the case,” stated Noël S. Harmon, PhD, President & Executive Director of APIA Scholars.
The investment will support 95 USAA Scholars through $880,000 in scholarship support for the APIA Scholarship cohort and an additional $220,000 designated to fund APIA Scholar programming. All Scholars will have access to year-long mentorship services, mental health resources, networking, and professional development opportunities that support college completion and success.
“As part of our ongoing commitment to advance diversity, equity and inclusion and empower underrepresented communities, we are proud to support APIA scholars,” said Justin Schmitt, Assistant Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at USAA. “Access to education and career paths help under-represented communities with socio-economic mobility. Our goal is to help close education gaps in our local communities.”
