As the new year unfolds, we find ourselves reflecting on the promise of renewal, hope, and opportunity. For APIA Scholars, the Lunar New Year represents not only a celebration of culture and community but also a moment to reaffirm our work in Scholarships, Student Success Programs and Research and Partnerships.
The past year has been one of progress and persistence, particularly for our Scholarships team as we unveiled our new approach to the Scholarships process and application. We decided to streamline the process to increase accessibility, reduce barriers, enhance efficiency, improve completion rates and encourage more applicants. We trimmed the number of application questions by 40% and removed GPA and recommendation letter requirements to reduce barriers to completion. The application was launched intentionally at a time that aligns with student schedules, and for a time frame that was 40% shorter than last year.
We are proud to share we succeeded in year one of these changes, with:
A total of 21,891 candidates engaged with the application process (+20% over last year)
More than 11,200 applicants submitted complete applications (+105% over last year); this represents a 52% completion rate — significantly higher than 29-30% in the previous two cycles
With our re-imagined approach, we have already made a tangible difference, empowering scholars to overcome systemic barriers and achieve their educational goals. Yet, as we enter 2025, significant challenges remain.
In 2025, APIA Scholars is doubling down on our mission. We’re piloting programs such as the Scholar Relief Funds that provide greater financial flexibility, so Scholars can use funds for essential needs like housing and food. We’re exploring ways to disburse funds directly to students, ensuring they receive timely support without unnecessary administrative delays. And we’re continuing to foster a sense of belonging through Student Success Programs and career-building initiatives.
But we can’t do this alone. We need the public to prioritize affordable higher education, corporate leaders to champion scholarship funding, and individuals to lend their voices and resources. Together, we can create a future where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
