As the year comes to a close, the holidays offer a perfect moment to reflect on the power of giving back. The spirit of giving back has a profound power to transform lives and uplift communities, particularly in underserved populations. For the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community, philanthropy isn’t just a gift; it’s a catalyst for change. Yet, AANHPI organizations receive less than 1% of philanthropic funding—a sobering statistic that underscores the importance of amplifying support for organizations like APIA Scholars.
At APIA Scholars, our mission is clear: make a difference in the lives of APIA students by providing them with resources that increase their access to higher education. Annually, we provide $3.5 million in scholarships to deserving students. However, the demand far outweighs our capacity—only 6% of applicants are funded, leaving 94% of talented and ambitious students without the financial support they need. This disparity represents a missed opportunity to invest in the changemakers of the future.
Why Scholarships Matter
Scholarships are more than financial aid; they are a lifeline that enables students to focus on their education without the crushing burden of debt. They open doors to higher education, helping students from low-income and underserved backgrounds access opportunities otherwise out of reach. But their impact doesn’t stop there.
Every scholarship awarded creates a ripple effect. These students, equipped with education and opportunity, often become trailblazers in their fields, role models in their communities, and agents of change. Investing in scholarships today is not just an act of generosity—it’s an investment in a brighter, more equitable future.
Giving Back, Paying Forward
The story of Nhi Bui, an alum of APIA Scholars, illustrates this ripple effect beautifully. “As a first generation [immigrant], I had limited financial resources [to attend college]. The road to higher education was daunting to me. But through the generosity of organizations like APIA Scholars, I was able to pursue my dream.”
With the support from the APIA Wells Fargo Scholarship, she pursued her education, achieved professional success as an oncology pharmacist and medical liaison, and now actively gives back. Nhi mentors young students, volunteers in her community, and helps create pathways for future generations. Her journey embodies the ethos of “paying it forward,” a principle deeply rooted in many AANHPI cultures. Bui said, “I am committed to paying [my success forward] through mentoring, networking and support. Together we can uplift and empower each other and ensure the legacy of APIA Scholars continues to impact lives for generations to come.”
When donors contribute to scholarships, they’re not only funding education; they’re fostering a cycle of giving that multiplies over time. Scholarship recipients often return as mentors, advocates, and philanthropists themselves, creating a legacy of support that uplifts the entire community.
Your Role in Building Tomorrow
Imagine what we could achieve if more individuals and organizations prioritized supporting AANHPI students. By increasing scholarship funding, we can empower thousands more students to achieve their dreams, lead with purpose, and drive meaningful change.
Giving back is a powerful act that transforms lives, strengthens communities, and shapes the future. By investing in APIA Scholars, you’re not just helping a student—you’re creating a leader, a role model, and a force for good in the world.
It’s time to close the funding gap and amplify the voices and potential of the AANHPI community. Together, let’s give back, pay it forward, and build a legacy that resonates for generations to come.
