Making Money Moves with Confidence: Highlights from APIA Scholars’ Fall Career Series

APIA Scholars hosts virtual workshops throughout the year designed with Scholars in mind. These one-hour interactive sessions focus on building strategies to support Scholars in understanding their career story, building their career capital, and learning how to make money work.  To help Scholars build confidence and skills, APIA Scholars hosted Money Moves: Payday and Beyond, an interactive virtual workshop designed to meet students where they are.

Led by Accredited Financial Counselor® Allison Sanka, the workshop focused on helping Scholars identify personal and cultural money norms that influence how they save, spend, and plan; apply frameworks and strategies for financial planning (short and long term); and  create personalized decision-making tools to make financial choices.

The session emphasized financial intentionality, guiding Scholars through realistic budgeting frameworks, including the 50/30/20 rule, and reinforcing the importance of conscious spending, early saving, and building emergency funds. By grounding financial planning in real-life scenarios and interactive polls, the workshop helped normalize financial challenges while offering approachable strategies for progress

Key Outcomes from Scholar Feedback

Post-workshop survey results showed strong alignment between the session’s goals and Scholar impact:

• Practical impact: 100% of respondents reported gaining tools they can apply to their financial future, and 95% said they learned new frameworks or strategies for financial planning.
• Confidence and clarity: Over 85% gained greater clarity around what financial planning can look like for them

Why This Work Matters

The response to our workshop reinforced the importance of our mission to lower financial barriers for Scholars. With 100% of respondents expressing interest in attending future financial wellness workshops, APIA Scholars will continue expanding programming that equips Scholars with the knowledge, confidence, and tools needed to navigate college, career entry, and long-term financial well-being.
