General Scholarship Questions

What is APIA Scholars?

APIA Scholars is the nation’s largest non-profit organization devoted to creating opportunities that provide access to higher education and resources that cultivate the academic, personal, and professional success Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) students. These efforts aim to advance the conversation around access to education, elevate the voice of the AANHPI community, and empower AANHPI leaders to drive systemic change.

What kinds of scholarships are offered by APIA Scholars?

APIA Scholars offers a range of scholarships and financial assistance to support AANHPI students who are underserved, with a focus on those who are living at or below poverty level, are first generation college students, and represent a geographically or ethnically diverse AANHPI community. Awards to our Scholars range from one-time $2,500 awards to multi-year $20,000 awards. Our vision is to provide scholarships to AANHPI students so they can cultivate their academic, personal, and professional success regardless of their ethnicity, national origin, or financial means.

What documents do I have to submit for the APIA Scholarship application?

For the initial application, we do not require any documents. Applicants selected as scholarship recipients will be asked to complete a Scholar Confirmation Form and some of the scholarships may require submitting documentation, such as a transcript, to secure the scholarship. If a selected scholarship recipient does not provide the requested information during the scholarship confirmation process, the scholarship offer will be rescinded. Any documents sent to APIA Scholars before they are expressly asked for by APIA Scholars will be disregarded.

I do not know where I’ll be going to college next fall – what do I put in the application?

We ask that you list your first-choice college or one of the colleges you are considering in this section. We understand that most first-time college students may not currently know where they will end up enrolling. If you advance to the next phase of the selection process, you will have an opportunity to provide an update if your college choice has changed.

I am not sure what my major/intended career will be – what do I put in my application?

If you do not know what you will be majoring in, or if you are currently undeclared, please select “Undecided” from the drop-down menu. We realize your academic interests might change over a few months. Those who are selected as recipients will have the opportunity to confirm their academic major in the Scholar Confirmation Form they will be asked to complete.

I don’t have any extracurricular activities or work experience – what should I do?

APIA Scholars considers many factors when reviewing scholarship applications and understands that for a variety of reasons not everyone may have had the ability to have extracurricular activities and/or work experience. We have a section of the application you can use to share information about a variety of activities, interests, and community involvement — including family responsibilities.

How long does the essay response on the application have to be?

You have up to 500 words for your essay. While there is no minimum word count, please note you should take more than a few sentences to thoughtfully answer. The essay is an important part of the application, and the area where APIA Scholars is best able to understand who you are as a whole person.

Are there resources to help me create a strong application? What if I am an English language learner?

Please see our Application Resources page for an application guide and tips for a strong application: Application Guide & Tips.

APIA Scholars encourages you to talk to your school, college counselor, or a trusted teacher/instructor to help you navigate the application process if English is not your first language. We understand the difficulty that many of our communities face in learning English and take that into consideration as we review our applications.
